As farmers, we all want working cattle to be quick, safe, low stress, and done with ease. Since getting the Arrowquip 86 series chute, that’s exactly what it’s been for us here at K+D Cattle Co.! This chute is truly top of the line, and we would recommend it to anyone that asked. It’s great for little calves, all the way up to full size bulls, as you’ll see in the pictures below.
1- The headcatch. That’s the yellow part you see here. This part is designed to hold the cow’s head in place when tagging, dehorning, etc. A cow’s natural instinct is to throw their head when someone is touching it, which can actually be dangerous to them and you. The headcatch safely holds their head in place to allow you to do what’s needed quickly without worrying about them throwing their head.
2- The ease of opening and closing, with the option of doing it from the back!! Some cows won’t go in if they can see you in the front. The lever on the back to shut the headgate allows you to be in different spots and still operate it yourself. Now this is a manual shoot, it was definitely something for me to get used to since I grew up with an automatic chute but now I don’t think I’d go back. With an automatic, we were always switching the width of the headgate to accomodate for cows or calves. We don’t have to worry about that with the manual. As soon as the cows head is in, you can close, and it locks it in place.
3- The versatile doors on the side that open easily and quickly to allow fast access for vaccinations and deworming is so handy. The amount of room you have to work with is wonderful and makes things go so fast.
4- The vet cage in the back!! The door opens right up. This allows for easy access to preg check, breed, ect. It’s also handy if the guy in the back needs to come outside the chute for some reason while a cow is locked in, they can come out the door instead of having to climb a gate.
5- The rubber floor!!! With the ancient chute I grew up with on my dads farm, the bottom gets slippery real fast, and we were always liming it in between cows to make sure they weren’t slipping.
6- the swinging bottom door! The whole bottom part of the shoot opens up as one door, this allows for perfect access when trying to get a new calf to nurse from mom.
7- Solid sliding back door. It’s so fast and easy to use. Also doesn’t allow the next cow to sneak in.
The other great part about this chute, is that me, as a female, can operate it on my own if I need to!! there isn’t anything that requires great strength and I love that it’s so easy that I can run it to. This chute has treated us very well so far. There are so many other features I didn’t even mention, I just talked about my favorites. Everyone knows that working cattle can be stressful!! I’m sure we aren’t the only ones who have some heated conversations in the moment when working cows, this chute has truly cut down on that stress on our farm and I couldn’t be happier about it. The cows are happy too! If you’re in the market for a new chute, contact your local Arrowquip dealer, and be sure to say Kyle and Danielle from K+D Cattle Co. in Almond, WI sent you!!
